How Coverage Works
Frequently Asked Questions
Coverage % is the proportion of the print area that is actually printed. A solid flood coat is 100%. A typical design with text and graphics is usually 40–70%.
Laydown GSM is the weight of wet ink deposited per square metre of film. Typical rotogravure ink laydown is 1.2 to 2.0 GSM per colour depending on cell depth.
Ink KG = Print Area (m²) × Coverage (%) × Laydown GSM ÷ 1000. This gives ink per colour. Multiply by number of colours for total ink.
This calculator is designed for rotogravure printing which is standard in flexible packaging. Flexo ink laydown values are different — adjust the laydown GSM accordingly.
